There have been 37 baseball players in the major leagues who were born in Nashville or Davidson County.  Jeff Bennett (currently Atlanta Braves) and R. A. Dickey (currently Seattle Mariners) are the only 2 active players from the area to have played with a big league team:

Turkey Stearnes, who was born in Nashville on May 8, 1901 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2000 by the Veterans Committee, played for the following Negro League teams: Nashville Elite Giants (1920), Montgomery Grey Sox (1921), Memphis Red Sox (1922), Detroit Stars (1923-1931, 1933, 1937), New York Lincoln Giants (1930), Kansas City Monarchs (1931, 1934, 1938-1941), Cole's American Giants (1932-1935), Philadelphia Stars (1936), Chicago American Giants (1938), Detroit Black Sox (1942), Toledo Cubs (1945).

 

Lee MacPhail, former president of the American League, was born in Nashville on October 25, 1917 and spent time in the front office of the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles.  He was also an assistant to Commissioner of Baseball William Eckert.  In 1998 MacPhail was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame where he and his father Larry MacPhail, who was elected in 1978, are the only father/son members.  MacPhail resides in Redding, Connecticut.

Chuck Meriwether was born in Nashville on June 20, 1956 and is currently a major league umpire.  Meriwether attended Father Ryan High School and has worked the All Star Game (1996, 2002), Divsion Series (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004), NLCS (2003), and the 2004 World Series.  He umpired in the Midwest League (1979), Eastern League (1980-1982), Pacific Coast League (1983-1985), and American Association (1986-1992) before joining the major leagues.  He was a member of the crew that worked David Cone's perfect game (July 18, 1999).
